barcode inventory system

How do I implement a barcode system to use for my inventory?

It is fairly simple The bar code scanners and software to print the labels are both readily available. The scanners usually plug into a USB port and act as input devices scanning the number from the bar code. Check the Internet you’ll find plenty of places to buy them.

When I bar-coded the inventory for a manufacturing company I established six digit part number system, the first two digits represented a group of items. For example a part number starting with 50 might represent chemical solvents. The last four digits would indicate the specific product.

As the parts were received from the vendor the appropriate label would be attached, in the case of small items the inventory bin holding the inventory item would have the bar code.

Using a inventory database, as items were pulled from inventory the quantity was input and bar code was scanned. Next the shop-orders would also be labeled with a bar-code indicating the job number. At the end of the day a report could be generated that would show the inventory used for each job and remaining inventory levels. We also had reports that would show when it was necessary to reorder components based on the ROP preset in the database. There are several database solutions available, I just created an access database but there are several products on the market that can be used.

Cycle counts would ensure accuracy.
