What age are you considered an adult and given property management in Germany?

My niece is going to live in Germany for her gap year and we need the following information if she wishes to remain there:
1) How old you need to be to own an apartment
2) How old you need to be to vote
3) How old you need to be to be considered an adult
4) A good website with information on living in Germany for Americans would be wonderful if possible

1) According to German law you can own things (including real estate) right after your birth and up until your death. So there is no age-limit to owning real estate.

But if your niece plans to stay in Germany for only one year it would make far more sense to rent than to buy. The real estate market in Germany is kind of sluggish, if you buy you buy for life. Real estate is hard to sell, with the legal issues involved it makes absolutely no sense to buy real estate just bc your niece wants to live in Germany for a year.

2) You need to be 18 and a German citizen to vote in federal elections. EU citizens can vote in communal elections, in some states you can vote in state and or in communal elections after you have turned 16.

3) 18.

You need to be 18 to drive a car and make major decisions (take out a loan, sign an employment contract, make major purchases, …) without the permission of your legal guardians.
